Last weekend the 50th Silberhorn Sir Bob Charles Tournament attracted a big field with 64 players enjoying the excellent conditions. This tournament, played over 18 holes, is open to both left and right handers, although only the left handers can win the coveted Sir Bob Charles Trophy. This year the winner of the Sir Bob Charles Trophy was Ian Buchanan with a 79 gross while the winner of the ‘lefties’ best net was Steve Hemingway who also won the Percy Holland Cup for the best vets net.

In the combined open section there was a 3-way tie on 75 at the end of 18 holes and Wayne O’Donnell, Simon Buckley and Cosmo Graham set off on extra holes. Wayne was eliminated after 2 holes but it took 5 extra holes before Titahi Bay junior, Cosmo Graham emerged as the winner of the WBS Sir Bob Charles Open Classic. The women’s section was won by Jo Bird.

The ‘Best Hat’ competition was won by Larraine Duckett.

One item of note was that there was only one 2 in the whole field and Dennis Hogg was the proud recipient of 24 golf balls!

With the 9 holers playing their club champs and both the vets and Tuesday ladies field being ‘rained off’ the only other competition that took place in the last week was the Thursday New World Supermarket competition which was won by returning member, Graeme McArthur with 40 points from Nooroa Rota, Murray Wolland and Gavin Harris, all on 39. The All Teed Up Nearest the Pin was won by Gavin Harris who also won a small birds nest for his two 2’s.

This Saturday both the men’s and women’s club fields will play a stroke (medal) round but the big event to get prepared for is the Lansdowne Park Masters on 20 November. The Pro-Am field is almost full so if you are thinking of entering get onto it now.

Off the Fairway

Over recent months there has been a lot of comment about the quickly increasing number of rabbits on the course. However there are a few less now as the other night a group of members, with approval, ‘removed’ 43 rabbits and 8 hares and hope to have another go in the next few weeks!
