Mike Dixon certainly knows when to go on the annual golf tour to the Gold Coast. The moment he goes winter strikes with a vengeance.
On Tuesday 7th July 17 hardy women did battle with continuous rain for a par round. The silver winner was Jo Philps with +3 followed by Jo Lucas, -3, and Sereana Phillips. The bronze player of the day was Lorraine Duckett on +2 followed by Isobelle Weaver and Pam Griffith on -1. Lorraine Duckette was closest to the in on No 8. Wednesday and Thursday were snow and ice, with no play.
The Greensome Foursomes were to be played on Friday but have now been postponed to September when spring should be here.
On Saturday 11 there didn’t seem to be anybody on the course, but apparently about 20 turned up and the mere males had a stroke round. Dennis Hogg belied his great age and won with a nett 68. Followed by Jim Kettle with 69. Tom Wells 70 and Paul Williams 71. Apparently Ray Verhaart also had a nett 70, but didn’t put his card in so missed the cut. The sole 2 was scored by Paul Fouhy and Rob Blackett was nearest the pin on No 18, for 3.
There may not have been too many women in the field as Lesley Stewart was the sole winner of the Stableford with 32 points.
Monday dawned bright and sunny so 36 vets frolicked on the course. The results were: Women: Venetta Justice 21, Elizabeth Bensaude 19 and Pam Sutherland 19. Men 1st Division: Kel Biggs 28, Charles Anderson 25 and Jamie Brunton 25. Men 2nd Division: Keith Nelson 25, Mike Inder 25 and Peter Cameron 21. Nearest the Pin Mick Gates.
Tuesday again dawned bright and sunny for the 18 hole women to have their frolic in the sun. Results: Silver: 1st Nooroa Rota 36; 2nd Marilyn Strang 35; 3rd Sereana Phillips 35. Bronze: 1st Jocelyn Pollock 40; 2nd Isobelle Weaver 35; 3rd Janna Blundell 32. Nearest the Pin No 8, Jo Lucas, No 18 Linda Cameron

Off the Fairway Those of us who used to our Vitamin C from the feijoa tree by the 1st tee were saddened by its removal. When the writer remonstrated with Robin he pointed out there were other feijoas by the 13th tee. That may be so but that’s a long way away. You could get scurvy by the time you reached it. Another great weekend for Danny Lee. Pity about the penalty shot. We all hope he will enjoy his weekend at St Andrews.
