John Hornabrook was one of Masterton, and NZ’s greatest golfers having won the Masterton senior championship five times, the Wairarapa Open eight times, the NZ Amateur three times (1935, 1936 and 1939) and the NZ Open twice (1937 and 1939) Gene Sarazen saw Hornabrook play in an exhibition match in Palmerston North and tried to get him to move to the US for a professional career but, money and the war, intervened.
In 1937 John Hornabrook donated a trophy to the Masterton club for a par competition and it has been played for every year since, including the war. The 78th John Hornabrook Cup was played for on Saturday and the gritty left hander, Steve Hemingway prevailed with a +3 score. Results were-

The All Teed Up Nearest the Pin on No 8 was John Hopkirk and on No 18, Mike Dixon. The Poste Haste draw, donated by John Hopkirk which takes place in the 19th every Saturday was won for the first time in 26 weeks by Geoff Masters.
The Baker and Cameron draws are on the noticeboard and men should be aware the first round of the Cameron Foursomes should have been played by now and the Baker, by 30 August.
The Oldfield Rosebowl has been decided with Carl Christensen defeating Brett Gould on the 18th hole.
One other important men’s result is the winning of the Paraparaumu Open by Kerry Mountcastle. Kerry’s rounds of 74 and 66 gave him a total of 140 and a clear two shots ahead of Peter Spearman Burn.
The women’s Riverside Cup interclub team played the last round of the trophy last Friday against Carterton at Featherston and lost 4-2. Masterton winners were Jeanette McNae and Ann Kenny. The team finished on 22½ points, 2½ behind winners Eketahuna.

Last Wednesday’s 9 holers played a stroke round which was won by Rosey Wellbrock with 31 nett from Di Herbert on 33. The PGG Wrightson Longest Drive went to Suzie Williams.
The New World Supermarket Thursday stableford competition was won by Bob Hill with 41 points from Paul Fouhy and Brad Chittick, both on 40. Simon Buckley was 4th with 39. The All Teed Up Closest to the Pin was Mike Falloon.
This Saturday the men’s club field will play a stroke round and a Moore Stephen Markham shootout qualifier while the women play a bogey round.
Off The Fairway
There has been a lot of head scratching and questions about the ‘bridge to nowhere’ that has appeared beside the men’s No 2 tee block. So here’s the answer! The firewood group have already started on removing the trees along the Manuka St boundary and in the coming months all the pines and macrocarpas beside both the men’s and women’s tees are to go. So the firewood ‘boys’ have easy access across the deep drain, David Brenkley and John Tatham have built the very sturdy bridge. But why the handrail you ask? Either a wicked sense of humour or Health and Safety regulations- take your pick.
