Masterton Golf Club

While the Maunsell Trophy may not be quite the oldest competition staged by the Masterton Golf Club the actual trophy must surely be one the oldest offered by any golf club in New Zealand.

The award itself is an old fashioned type of three wood, known as a Baffy which was donated to the club in 1952 by the late Ted Maunsell. The club was once owned by the great Scottish golfer Willie Auchterlonie, who won the Open in 1892, although probably not with the club up in the club house. It was made about 1870 by David Anderson, one of the founders of the famous golf manufacturing firm, Robert Forgan Limited. Traditionally the Maunsell Trophy is played over two rounds, the first or qualifying round being a stroke round and then the top qualifiers play a par round.

On Saturday the men’s field played the qualifying round with the top 16 playing for the trophy next Saturday. Unfortunately the list of qualifiers is as yet, ‘unavailable’

Tuesday turned out to be a beautiful day and a big field took part in the women’s LGU and putting round. Results were-

The Putting was won by Linda Cameron (Silver) with 30 putts and Jenny Sadler (Bronze) with 29. The Nearest the Pin on No 8 was Lesley Stewart and on No 18, Jenny Sadler.

The Wednesday 9 holers played a stableford round which was won by Di Herbert with 19 points from Di Alexander and Jill Slight, both with 18.

The PGG Wrightson Longest Drive went to Beet Horrocks.

The Thursday New World Supermarket stableford competition was won by Geoff Masters with 41 points from Bob Hill with 40. Third was Paul Fouhy on 39 and then Danny Clarkson and Peter Forrester on 38. The All Teed Up Nearest the Pin was Bob Hill.

Last Monday the vets had a stableford round. Results were-

The Fagan Ford Nearest the Pins were Jinny Small and Ash Peterson.

This Saturday the men will play a par round with the top qualifiers playing for the Maunsell Trophy while the following Saturday is the Sellar Trophy, the men’s stroke play championship. The women’s field will play a stableford.

Off the Fairway

The carpet laying in the 19^th is progressing on schedule and should be almost finished this week. The only glitch has been the intention to sand and varnish the area in front of the bar as, when the old carpet was lifted, this area consisted of a ‘mishmash’ of timber, so a vinyl floor may be required!
