The biggest gallery for some years watched the conclusion of the 2015 club match play championships on Sunday with over 50 surrounding the 18th green as the senior men’s final reached its 36th hole. Earlier in the day Sam Forrester and Kerry Mountcastle had been all square through 7 holes and at lunch Sam had eased out to be 3 up. He increased this lead in the afternoon and after 29 holes (No 11 second time round) it looked almost over when he was 5 up with 7 to play. However ‘Amen Corner’ played its part and Kerry won 12, 13 and 14 and then 16 before a half on No 17 meant Sam was 1 up with one to play. Both players were on or near the green for two and ended with birdies for Sam to win an enthralling final 1 up. This was Sam’s ninth final and fourth victory.

In the women’s silver final, also over 36 holes, Nooroa Rota gained an early advantage over Carolyn Stevenson and was 6 up after 18 holes and remained that way after lunch although Carolyn made some headway, but Nooroa eventually won 5/3.

There was a bit more ‘give and take’ in the women’s bronze A final where Jenni Johnston gained the early advantage over Jane Williams to be 2 up after 7 and then all square at lunch. However in the afternoon Jane worked her way to a 4 up lead only for Jenni to win three holes in a row (14,15,16) before Jane closed out the match with a 2 up win.

The men’s intermediate A final saw Jeff Ogg play Gary Tennant. Gary made a very tentative start and was 5 down after 7 holes and Jeff was 6 up at lunch. However Gary slowly worked his way back into the match but the good start by Jeff proved too much and Jeff won the match 2/1.

The junior final also proved a tense struggle with Gary Stewart taking the early lead over Jamie Strang and being 3 up at lunch. The afternoon saw the roles reversed and Jamie won four of the first 7 holes the second time round to eventually win 4/3.

The masters final, over 18 holes saw Jamie Brunton play Robin Carseldine and the match was all square after 9 holes but Robin, who had never been behind in the match ‘eased out’ to a 3/2 win.

In the consolation finals Jo Philps won the silver plate, 3/1, Lusiana Williams won the silver flight 5/4, Janice Hayes won the bronze A plate 4/2, Pam Griffith won the bronze A flight 4/3 and Ray Verhaart won the intermediate B 2/1.
