Masterton Golf Club

Interclub matches are very few and far between now that most of the interclub season is over but on Monday Wellington Golf held a field day at Paraparaumu to mark the end of the women’s Pennants season. The format was teams of three pairs playing foursomes. Masterton had two teams playing and our No 2 team came 2nd in a field of 22 teams. Sereana Phillipps and Larraine Duckett came 2nd in the individual pairs with 33 stableford points.

The 9 holers interclub played their last fixture last Thursday at Boulcott’s Farm when they met Kapiti for a 1-3 loss. The only winner was Rosey Wellbrock. Masterton finished the season in the middle of the field.

On Saturday the final of the Oldfield Rosebowl, the men’s match play with handicap competition, saw Ray Verhaart meet Mike Dixon in what proved to be a very close tussle. Dixon quickly went 2 up and slowly Verhaart pegged him back and at the turn Dixon held a slender 1 up lead. Verhaart won the 10th, the only shot hole in the whole match, and it remained square until the 15th when Dixon had a terrible drive and a worse second to lose the hole and then proceed to miss a vital putt on the 16th to go 2 down. The 17th was halved and Verhaart won the match and the trophy, 2 and 1. This is Verhaart’s third victory in this competition, having won the Oldfield in both 2007 and 2013.

Saturday, for men, was also a stroke round off the blue tees for the Challenge Shield and Chairman’s Trophy, although none of the scoring put at risk the ‘benchmarks’ set earlier in the year. The women’s field played a stableford round. Results were-
