Masterton Golf Club

Last Saturday was the Masterton Halberg Day, organised by the Eagles and all proceeds going to the Halberg Disability Trust to enable disabled sports people to compete with their contemporaries. The Masterton Eagles raised over $1100 for the Trust. The day was ‘won’ by Men’s Club Captain, Tony Rowntree with 41 stableford points. Other results were-

The nearest the Pins were won by Derek Clarkson and Alan Williams and the longest drives went to Jocelyn Pollock and Ian Buchanan.

The Tuesday ladies got a beautiful day to make up for last week’s wash out and played for the Eunice Robieson 27 Hole Trophy which is a best nett competition. The trophy was won by Sereana Phillipps with a net score of 109. Second was Brenda Blatchford on 110 and third Jane Buchanan on 111. The Graeme Jones Car Rental Nearest the Pin on No 8 went to Jan McLaren and No 18 to Brenda Blatchford who birdied the hole.

Last week’s Wednesday 9 holers played a putting round on the pink course. Di Herbert won the competition with 14 putts from Ruth Wiley, with 15. The PGG Wrightson Longest Drive was won by Di Herbert and the All Teed Up Nearest the Pin, Rosey Wellbrock.

The Monday vets got a brilliant day for their stableford competition. Results were-

The Fagan Ford Nearest the Pins were won by Pam Sutherland and David Brenkley.

The New World Supermarket Thursday stableford competition was won by Jeff Ogg, with 40 points from Simon Dew and Derek Clarkson, both with 39. Fourth was Tony Roseingrave from Dennis Hogg, both with 38. The All Teed Up Closest to the Pin was Carl Christensen and Jeff Ogg won a small birdsnest.

There has been a change in the programme for the next two weeks- this Saturday will now be Margaret Wallace Day and a mixed stableford competition will be held with cards in by 12 noon, then the following Saturday, 20 September, the Sellar Trophy, the men’s club stroke play championship will be held over four divisions, senior or ‘open’, intermediate. junior and masters. The intermediate and senior sections are over 36 holes and the junior and masters over 18 holes. As this day is also Election Day, anyone playing in the 36 hole sections may have trouble getting to a voting place on Election Day so should vote in advance (anytime between now and 20 September) Over recent years the Sellar Trophy has also been the qualifying rounds for the club champs (match play) but, this year, that will not be the case and championship seedings will be decided on your stroke index. Off The Fairway

Last Tuesday the women’s club day had to be abandoned when very heavy rain caused play to become impossible. However, just before the stop in play one lady, (shall remain nameless) who was using a golf cart become ‘stuck’ on the steep rise just off the path on No 4. Ladies rushed to her assistance and got behind for a good push, just as she put her foot down again. Wheels spun and the cart moved but not before Lorraine, our gallant office administrator, was covered in mud from the spinning tyres!
