Masterton Golf Club

The WBS Labour Day Tournament, postponed on the actual Labour Day itself, was held on Saturday and attracted a good field, including visitors from Martinborough, Carterton, Trentham and Pahiatua. The competition was a stableford, divided into women’s and two groups of men. Abbreviated results were-

The longest drives went to Neville Baldwin, Jim Kettle and Brenda Blatchford, and the nearest the pins were awarded to Simon Buckley and Alec Rawlins (Carterton)

 

The vets have played twice in the last week because their usual day was Labour Day. Last Wednesday an ambrose round was played. Results were-

Roger Gardner won the Fagan Ford Nearest the Pin.

 

Last Wednesday the 9 holers played the first round of their championships and the winner was Gill Neal with 38, followed by Ruth Wiley with 39. The PGG Wrightson Longest Drive went to Di Herbert.

 

Usually when conditions are ‘near perfect’ the scoring in the New World Supermarket Thursday stableford competition is spectacular but for some reason it was not so good and 34 points would have won a prize. However Steve Hemingway was the exception with an excellent 40 points winning the competition from Tony Rowntree with 38 and Sila Faaiuaso with 36. The All Teed Up Closest to the Pin was Carl Christensen.

 

On Tuesday the club held its popular Melbourne Cup Tournament and the results of this will be published next week.

 

This weekend the club day on Saturday is a stableford round for men and a ‘Captain’s Choice’ for women but the main interest in the weekend will be on Sunday when both the men’s and women’s club match play championships will be held. The women have now ‘found’ their finalists and in the Silver division Linda Cameron will play Sereana Phillipps, in the Bronze A division Sue Rutene will play Jocelyn Pollock and in the Bronze B division the final will be between Isobelle Weaver and Ngaire Stevens. The women also play ‘plates’ and ‘flights’ which will also be held on Saturday, so if you want to see some good golf come throughout the day and follow the matches.
