Both the women’s and men’s interclub teams have been in action over the last week, with mixed results.
The women’s Riverside Cup team played Eketahuna at Mahunga for a 3½-2½ victory. Wins were recorded by Ann Kenny, Janice Hayes and Isobelle Weaver and the team is currently 1st = almost half way through the competition.
In the women’s Pennants grades Div 2 has continued its competition with the Section 1 team playing Boulcott’s Farm at Miramar for a 2-4 loss. Wins went to Anne Smith and Julie Hamilton. This division has one round to go. In Section 2 Masterton met Royal Wellington at Te Marua in the last round of the round robin competition and had a good win 3½-2½, with wins to Lola Ogg, Pam Griffith and Jane Buchanan. The team has finished this part of the competition in 2nd place and is not sure if there will be post section finals.
In the men’s interclub the next round of the Marquis Shield was held on Sunday with Masterton meeting Eketahuna at Featherston. In the Marquis competition, where players play with handicap, Masterton won 3-1 and, although the singles results were drawn Masterton prevailed in the fourballs to gain the edge. Singles wins to Brett Gould, Ray Verhaart, John Francis, Kerry Mountcastle, Dean Gray and Rob Blackett. Masterton is now 2nd in the Marquis competition. In the senior Workman Cup and Intermediate Cup, both ‘off the stick’, Masterton are placed 2nd and 3rd respectively while in the junior Sutherland Trophy Masterton are currently 1st =.
Our Div 1 team was supposed to have played the first round of the President’s Salver at Shandon, but because of the major storm in Wellington on Thursday the Shandon course was closed and this round will be played at Wainuiomata next Saturday
In Div 3 Masterton travelled to Miramar and came away with a good 6-9 loss with singles wins to Simon Buckley, Kevin Mackay, Pim Borren and Jim Kettle. In Div 6 Masterton hosted Trentham and were hoping for a good home win. However the team lost all the fourballs and those 5 points meant a 5-10 loss at home and a tough battle next week. Singles wins went to Wayne O’Donnell, Derek Clarkson, Ray Verhaart, Paul Fouhy and Trevor Howard.
The vets got a magnificent day on Monday for a stableford round and attracted a good field. Results were-

The Fagan Ford Nearest to the Pin’s on No 8 were won by Elizabeth Bensaude and Roger Gardner.
The 9 holers had a stableford competition on Wednesday which was won by Ruth Wiley and Geri Southey, both on 18 points. Third, on 17, were Jill Murphy, Suzie Williams and Lorraine Jones. Jane Watts was the PGG Wrightson Longest Drive winner.
On Tuesday the ladies field played a par round. Results were-

Carolyn Stevenson won the All Teed Up No 8 Nearest the Pin and Sereana Phillipps the New World Supermarket No 18.

The Thursday New World competition was the ‘Wayne Mita’ show as his 48 stableford points were seven better than second placed Gavin Harris. Third was Carl Christensen on 39, followed by Tony Roseingrave and Russell Stewart, on 38. The All Teed Up Nearest the Pin was won by Jeff Ogg.

This weekend the men’s Div 1 teams play Judgeford at Wainuiomata and both the men’s 18 hole teams play their last competition round, both at home against Manor Park. The club competition will be a Moore Stephens Markham Shootout (stroke) round for men and a Home Pennants Stableford for women. On Sunday the Tilson Salver team plays Riversdale at Carterton.
Off The Fairway
This Sunday is the All Teed Up Ambrose Tournament at Masterton. It’s open to all (must have a NZGA handicap) with teams of three and registration from 10am for a tee off at 11am. The field is limited to the first 36 teams so enter now in the Masterton pro shop.
