Masterton Golf Club

Two of the men’s interclub teams played on Sunday, with quite contrasting results. The Div 1 team was up against Paraparaumu at Royal Wellington in the sudden death promotion relegation match which was supposed to have been played a week earlier, and the postponement meant our team were considerably under strength. The result was a heavy defeat 11-4 with matches won by Simon Dew and Pim Borren (foursomes) and singles wins to Kerry Mountcastle and Sam Forrester. The result could mean that Masterton return to Div 2 for the first time in 6-7 years, but Wellington Golf is currently talking to clubs about merging Div 1 and 2 into one division and changing the format of the competition next year. The Match Committee will need to get this sorted as well as have a close look at our playing strength in this grade.

Back at Mahunga the men’s Marquis Shield team was playing top of the table, Carterton and surprised many with a convincing 4-0 win, which means that, in the Marquis competition, with one round to go, Masterton now leads by two points. Masterton’s individual winners were Innes Kennard, Brett Gould, John Francis, Ray Verhaart and Peter Forrester, with four halves. This is the first time for many years that Masterton has been in this position as we are usually vying for the wooden spoon at this stage of the competition. Points are not yet available on the Wellington Golf website for the other three competitions.

The Fagan Ford Nearest the Pin was won by Laurie Williams.

The 9 holers played a stableford round with the winner being Val Diedrichs on a score of 27. Second were Jill Murphy and Jill Slight on 18. The PGG Wrightson Longest Drive went to Jill Murphy. 9 holers are looking forward to their trip to Riversdale on 24 June.

Last Thursday was a very cold day and a very small field played the New World Supermarket stableford competition which was won again by Brad Chittick with another 42 points. This is the first time anyone could remember where the winner has won two weeks in a row with the same score. Second was Wayne Mita on 40 and third, Simon Buckley, on 34.

Last Saturday the men’s club field played a stroke round for the Challenge Shield and Chairman’s Trophy while the women had an LGU round. A gross 70 by Kerry Mountcastle set the new mark in the Challenge Shield but Sila Fa’aiuaso still holds the Chairman’s Trophy with a nett 66. Results were-

The All Teed Up Nearest the Pins on No 13 were Sila Fa’aiuaso and Nooroa Rota and No 18, Wayne O’Donnell. The birds nest, which has jackpotted over the last two months, was struck by Ian Buchanan.

On Tuesday the women’s field had an LGU and Putting competition. Results were-

The putting was won by Sereana Phillipps (Silver) with 27 putts, and Trish Newcombe (Bronze) with 29.

This Saturday a number of the men will be away on the overnight trip to Hawke’s Bay but the club field will play a stableford round and the men, a Moore Stephen Markham Shoot out qualifier.

Over the last few months the Poste Haste Members Draw has continued to jackpot and is now up to $160. To win this you have to be a member of the golf club and be in the 19^th at approximately 5pm on a Saturday when the membership number is ‘drawn’. To date there has not been a winner!
