Our Marquis Shield team did not have a happy day last Sunday despite the perfect conditions at Carterton GC and the well-presented course. But in our defense, we were up against the Host Club and local knowledge must have played some part. We were soundly beaten in the Seniors and the Juniors with our strong Intermediate team having wins to Tony Rowntree and Mike Dixon with Ray Verhaart gaining a half. Harry Quinn sunk a curling downhill 8-footer on his final hole to get a half in the Juniors. All other results in the singles went Carterton’s way.
In the Fourballs only Dixon and Verhaart were victorious whilst Tony Rowntree was the only singles winner ‘off the stick’ in the whole team.
So, it’s called a shellacking and that it was. A 14 – 4 loss in the Marquis Shield and an 11 – 1 thrashing in the Off-the-stick matches.
But redemption awaits. We have the advantage next round on 22 May, playing at home against the current competition front runners, Pahiatua.
