Recently the second to last round of the men’s Marquis Shield was played at Martinborough and Masterton met Eketahuna and had their best showing of this year’s competition winning eight of the twelve singles matches and four of the six fourballs to gain the maximum 4 points. Marquis singles winners were Dean Gray, Gavin Harris, Rob Blackett, Harry Quinn, Ray Verhaart, John Tulloch, Darryl Hart and Trevor Smith. With one round to go Masterton lies 3rd in the Marquis (on handicap) competition, 2nd in the Workman Cup (seniors off the stick), 3rd in the Intermediate Cup (off the stick), 2nd in the Sutherland Trophy (juniors on handicap) and 5th in the Fourball Trophy.
On Monday the women’s Pennants Div 1 interclub played the last round robin match against Martinborough at Miramar and came away with a good 6½-2½ win. Singles wins were recorded by Sereana Phillipps, Carolyn Stevenson, Jo Philps and Jan Williams. In a very tight division Masterton came 4th, three points behind the winner, and qualified for the final series beginning on 13 June.
The 9 holers had another round of interclub last Thursday and played Otaki at Kapiti and lost 1½-2½ with the sole winner being Ruth Wiley. The are no 9 holers club results this week as only two players braved the wind and rain.
On Sunday the women’s Tilson Salver team played the second to last round at Castlepoint against Riversdale Beach and had a 4-2 win. Winners were Jocelyn Pollock, Lesley Stewart, Lorraine Stewart and Marilyn Beetham. Masterton is currently in 5th position.
Heavy rain at 11 o’clock on a Saturday does not auger well for a good field for the 12 noon disc draw and so it proved this week with 19 members ‘fronting up’ for the Riverside Salver, a one round stableford trophy. However, the rain cleared and the flooded greens drained and the competition was held, even if the scoring was ‘average’. Simon Buckley emerged the winner of the Riverside Salver, with 36 points. Last Thursday a good field participated in the New World Supermarket stableford. 38 was a very popular total with no fewer than four players on this total but the winner was Peter Forrester, from Geoff Masters, Geoff McKay and Dennis Hogg. Fifth equal, on 37, were Brad Chittick and Sila Fa’aiuaso. The All Teed Up Nearest the Pin was Alan Sadler.
This Saturday the men’s club field will play a Challenge Shield and Chairman’s Trophy stroke round and a Moore Stephens Markham Shootout qualifier but the big event of the weekend in on Monday when the All Teed Up Queens Birthday Ambrose will be held. This is a 3-person team competition that is open to all (must have a NZGA handicap) with registration from 10am for a tee off at 11am. The field is limited to the first 36 teams so enter now in the Masterton pro shop.
