The 9 holers played the last round of the Wellington 9 Hole Interclub last Friday and met Kapiti at Martinborough. Kapiti were the leaders going into the last round and needed a good win to secure the top spot, while Masterton, in their first season in the competition were comfortable in the middle of the table. With other results going their way the 2-2 draw meant that Kapiti retained their position and Masterton finished 5th with one point separating 3rd from 5th. Winners were Rosey Wellbrock and Val Diedrichs.
On Wednesday the 9 holers had a putting round which was won by Gill Neal and Mary Herrick, both on 17 putts. The PGG Wrightson Longest Drive went to Helen Ordish.
The Tuesday women’s field played a Home Pennants Stableford. Results were-

The All Teed Up Nearest the Pin was Carolyn Stevenson and the New World No 18, Janna Blundell.
The New World Supermarket stableford competition attracted a good winter field and was won by Mike Falloon with 42 points from Justin Herbert with 41. Third was Geoff McKay and Russell Stewart on 40 before a big drop to the rest of the field.
Last Saturday the men’s club field played a par round and with 26 players away on the ‘interclub’ trip there was only one division. Results were-

The All Teed Up Nearest the Pin on No 13 was Murray Wolland and the All Teed Up No 18 was Simon Smith.
Meanwhile in Hawke’s Bay the men’s group were doing battle at Bridge Pa for the ‘Interclub Trophy’ with two teams representing the Chairman and the Captain in a stableford battle. At the end of the first day the Captains team were 20 points in front but after an ‘overnighter’ and Maraenui the second day, the Chairman’s team overcame the deficit and won the trophy by 15 points. The best gross score of the weekend was Kerry Mountcastle’s 70, or two under par, at Bridge Pa.
This Saturday the men’s club day is a ‘Captain’s Choice’ and the women will play a stableford round but the main interest this weekend will be on Sunday when the men’s Marquis Shield team play the final round against Martinborough at Martinborough and the women’s Tilson Salver team play the final round against Carterton at home.
Off The Fairway
Usually ‘what goes on tour stays on tour’ but I think I’m allowed this contribution! Last weekend Brett Gould and John Francis agreed to play their Oldfield Trophy match at Bridge Pa instead of trying to find a convenient time when they returned. However our players teed off from 12.30pm and they were ‘drawn’ in the last group away so, with it being very close to the shortest day and darkness descending about 5ish they were in big trouble when Brett Gould won the 17th to square the match with one hole to play. The 18th was played in darkness and only the lights of the club house helped to show them the way. However the last hole was halved and they wisely decided they could not continue to the 19th hole so decided to start again at Maraenui the next day where the match was decided quite emphatically in Brett’s favour.
