Masterton Golf Club

The Trust House Wairarapa Women’s Open was held last Friday with 53 players battling their way through a gale nor-wester. The main problem of the day was golf balls blowing off the greens and actually getting to the course as many of the players had to drive through foul weather from as far afield as Waipukurau, Dannevirke, Otaki and Pongaroa to play, so full marks to them for facing the challenge.

The winner of the 18 hole tournament was Masterton’s Sereana Phillipps with an 85 gross and the best overall nett was Jane Buchanan with 74. The prize table, organised by Marilyn Strang and Jo Lucas had to be seen to be believed!

One player, Louise Smith from Waipukurau, found the best way to beat the wind on the greens was to chip out.  This she did four times and was rewarded with a prize for her efforts.

A full round of the men’s Saturday interclub took place over the weekend and the most successful team was the Div A4 team which had an 8½-6½ win over Ohariu Valley at Masterton. Singles wins went to Jamie Brunton, Carl Christensen, Paul Fouhy, Ash Peterson and Derek Clarkson. The other 18 hole team, A1, also played at home against Paraparaumu but had an emphatic 4-11 defeat with the only singles win going to Jim Kettle. Meanwhile the Gibsonsheat Premier team played in the first round of the Duncan Cup against Paraparaumu at Otaki and lost 3-12, with Kerry Mountcastle and Rob Blackett recording wins.

The Saturday club competition was a stableford round for both men and women. Results were-

The Thursday New World stableford competition was won by Ewen Macdonald with a whopping 46 points. Ewen’s round included six birdies and an eagle and he won the birdsnest with his four 2’s! A distant second was Brent McHattie on 41 and third was Peter Cottier with 38. The All Teed Up Nearest the Pin was Ian Buchanan.

On Tuesday the women’s field played a Home Pennants Stableford. Results were-

The Quilters Lane Nearest the Pin on No 8 was Isobelle Weaver and No 18, Nooroa Rota.

Last Wednesday the 9 holers had a PGG Wrightson stableford round which was won by Erroll Warren on 21 points from Marilyn Price and Val Diedrichs on 20. The PGG Wrightson Longest Drive was won by Ruth Wiley.

This weekend the Gibsonsheat Premier team play Judgeford at Shandon and the 18 hole interclub has its second to last round with Div A1 away at Wainuiomata and Div A4 at home to Karori. We will also have four Duncan Cup teams on the course but the Match Committee is planning a club day with the usual 12 noon disc draw. On Sunday the Marquis Shield team plays Eketahuna at Martinborough.
