Masterton Golf Club

The second to last round of the Riverside Cup, the women’s Wairarapa midweek interclub was played last Friday and Masterton had a 5-1 win against Martinborough at Carterton. Winners were Jeanette McNae, Brenda Blatchford, Jocelyn Pollock, Janice Hayes and Trish Newcombe. This result leaves Masterton in 2nd position, ½ point behind Eketahuna with one round, against Eketahuna, to go.

Last weekend was the men’s golfing trip ‘away’ and this year 23 golfers, including club pro, Shaun Hewitt, played Belmont in Wanganui on Saturday and Hokowhiti in Palmerston North on Sunday. Results were-

Belmont (Nett plus Putts)

Longest Day                                                 Gavin Harris

The overall winner of the weekend when both rounds are taken into account was PGA pro Shaun Hewitt whose 106 on Day 1 and 34 points on Day 2 put him in front.

There are always some hard luck stories on trips like this and perhaps the best (or worst?) of these was the two shot penalty that Geoff Masters incurred on No 18 at Hokowhiti for playing the wrong ball- without that he would have won the day’s competition. All players seem to have had a great time, including the always reliable bus driver, Kevin Mackay and efficient organiser, Gavin Harris.

The Saturday club field was obviously reduced with a busload of members away on the overnight trip. The stableford results were-

2nd       Bill Sangster                                     36

The All Teed Up Nearest the Pin’s on No 8 were Murray Wolland and June Roseingrave.

A cold, bleak day greeted the Tuesday ladies who played an LGU, Putting and Moore Stephens Markham Shootout round. Results were-

Midwinter weather affected the field for the New World Supermarket Thursday competition which was won by Carl Christensen with 41 points, three ahead of 2nd placed Ash Peterson and Dennis Hogg, both on 38. Fourth was Steve Hemingway on 37. The All Teed Up Nearest the Pin was Trevor Smith.
