Masterton Golf Club

John Hornabrook was one of Masterton, and NZ’s greatest golfers having won the Masterton senior championship five times, the Wairarapa Open eight times, the NZ Amateur three times (1935, 1936 and 1939) and the NZ Open twice (1937 and 1939) Gene Sarazen saw Hornabrook play in an exhibition match in Palmerston North and tried to get him to move to the US for a professional career but, money and the war, intervened.

In 1937 John Hornabrook donated a trophy to the Masterton club for a par competition and it has been played for every year since, including the war. The 79^th John Hornabrook Cup was played for on Saturday, after being postponed the previous week, and Kevin Mackay won with a +6 score. Results were-

On Tuesday the women’s field played an LGU and Putting round which also doubled as a Moore Stephens Markham Shootout qualifier. Results were-

The Silver Putting was won by Jan Williams with 28 putts and the Bronze by Val Cobb with 26.

The Quilters Lane Nearest the Pin on No 8 was Sue Dalziell the New World Supermarket No 18 went to Rosemary Laffey.

 

The vets had a good turnout for the Monday stableford round. Results were-

The Fagan Ford Nearest the Pin was won by Alex Tulloch.

 

The New World Supermarket Thursday stableford competition saw nine players record 37 points each but the winner was Geoff McKay from David Cook. Mike Dixon was 3^rd from Brent McHattie. The All Teed Up Closest to the Pin was Allan Williams who also won a good birdsnest for two 2’s.

 

Last Wednesday’s 9 holers played a putting round which was won by Mary Herrick with 14 putts from Di Herbert, Jinny Small and Val Diedrichs, all with 15 putts. The PGG Wrightson Longest Drive went to Di Herbert.

 

This Saturday the men’s club field will play for the Maunsell Trophy, a stroke round over 18 holes with the top 16 players qualifying for a final par round on 10 September. The women’s field will have a Captains Choice.
