The 9 holers are competing in the Wellington interclub programme for the first time and, after a hesitant start, have gradually improved and, with one round to go are now in mid table. Last Thursday the team travelled to Otaki to play Boulcott Farm and the 3-1 victory shows just how far they have come in a short period of time. Wins were recorded by Rosie Wellbrock, Di Herbert and Ruth Wiley.
On Monday the Juken NZ Queens Birthday tournament was held and attracted a disappointing turnout of players. The overall winner of the day was Trevor Smith on 43 stableford points. In the women’s division first was Nooroa Rota with 34 points from Jocelyn Pollock on 31. The men’s division was won by Vince Duckett with 43 points. Second equal was ‘gaggle’ of players on 39, Sila Fa’aiuaso, Bruce Watkins and Allan Ewington.
On Tuesday the ladies field played for the Norah Lambourn Trophy, a 4BBB competition where players can choose their own partners. Four pairs tied for the trophy on nett 65, Pam Griffith and Carolyn Stevenson, Sereana Phillipps and Trish Newcombe, Jane Buchanan and Ann Kenny, and Jan Williams and Janice Hayes. The All Teed Up Nearest the Pin on No 8 went to Trish Newcombe and the New World No 18 to Jan Williams.
Last Friday the Rew and McCracken Cup was held at Riversdale Beach with seven Wairarapa clubs competing. The cup was won by Masterton when all the nett scores of the players were added together. The victorious team was Sereana Phillipps, Brenda Blatchford, Marilyn Strang, Jo Philps, Anne Smith and Trish Newcombe.
The men’s Saturday competition was a stableford round with eligible men also playing for the Granddad’s Trophy which was easily won by Tom Webb who played beautiful golf off his 23 handicap for 42 points. Other results were-

The All Teed Up Nearest the Pin on No 13 was Allan Carroll and on No 18, Alec Ward, but perhaps the best shot of the day went to Paul Fouhy who got a two on No 16 from 150m out.
On Thursday the New World competition was won by Brad Chittick whose 42 points saw him a clear winner from Simon Smith and Justin Herbert, both with 40. Simon Dew and Jeff Ogg were 4th with 39.
This weekend the men’s club day will be a stroke round for the Challenge Shield and Chairman’s Trophy while the women have a LGU and putting round and a shootout qualifier. Our Div 1 team will be at Royal Wellington playing Paraparaumu in the promotion relegation match and on Sunday the men’s Marquis Shield interclub team meets Carterton at Mahunga.
Next weekend (13-14 June) the men ‘away’ trip to Hawke’s Bay takes place (Bridge Pa and Maraenui) You should have put your name on the list by now but if you still want to go, please ring John Hopkirk.
Off The Fairway
The improvements to the surrounds of No 8 are almost finished and look spectacular. The new turf is expected to take about 3 weeks to ‘bed itself in’ and in the meantime we will continue playing the temporary No8 (after No 9), an arrangement which is not causing any hassles.
