Masterton Golf Club

Last week the men’s stroke play championship, the Sellar Trophy, was played over four divisions. The senior or open grade was won by Sam Forrester from Kerry Mountcastle and Sam was presented with the trophy which is a 1906 putter presented to the club by JA Sellar. Results were-

Last weekend the men played for the Maunsell Trophy which follows the traditional format of a qualifying stroke round on Saturday followed by a par round on Sunday. However the 16 finalists did not get a chance to play the final as Sunday’s weather meant the day was postponed. Results of the qualifying stroke round were-

Last Friday the women’s PGG Wrightson Greensome Foursomes were held with a good field and brilliant weather. Results were-

The longest drives went to Kay Wall and Jocelyn Pollock and the nearest the pins to Sereana Phillipps and Joan Smith.

Last Tuesday the women played for the Norah Lambourn Trophy, a 4BBB competition and it was great that a number of past players, including Norah, were invited to a lunch before play. Results were-

The 9 holers played a stroke round with the winner being Di Herbert with 33 nett from Ruth Wiley with 35. The PGG Wrightson Longest Drive went to Rosie Wellbrock.

 

Last Thursday’s New World stableford was won by Peter Forrester from Harry Quinn, both on 39. Third was Simon Smith. Remarkably there were twelve 2’s on the day and three players, Peter Forrester, Ash Peterson and Simon Smith got two each, thus sharing the small birdsnest.

 

Now some news on some of our top players-

 

Masterton had 2 players involved in this event over the weekend at Otaki, Sam-Maree Brown and Kerry Mountcastle. On Saturday Kerry lost in the first round in a close match to David Van Drimmelen (from Karori)  1 down.

Sam-Maree won her first round match 1 up against a less experienced player Glennie Hayward from Paraparaumu. On Sunday morning in wet and windy conditions Sam took on the much more experienced Te Rongapai Clay from Titahi Bay in the semi finals.  Sam got off to a quick start  and was 2up after 3. Te Rongapai fought back and was then 1up after 9. Sam then had a good stretch of holes with wins on the 10^th, 11^th & 12^th (including  a birdie on the par 3 12^th). Te Rongapai got the match back to 1 the difference  with a birdie on the par 3 14^th but Sam held her nerve (and game together) to seal her best matchplay win to date, 2 and 1 on the 17^th. The final was due to be played on Sunday but has been postponed to a later date due to the weather conditions.

In the final Sam will take on Emma Hayward (Glennie’s older and more experienced sister). A win against Emma would see Sam wrap up the No 1 spot for the Wellington Women’s order of merit for the 2014  season and along with it automatic selection for the Wellington Women’s inter provincial team, with their  national event to be held at Lochiel (Hamilton) in early December.

 

Off The Fairway

Recently a Keir Trophy match, which began at 11.30 was finally settled, in near darkness, at 6pm on the 27^th green! The result will show that Jocelyn Pollock and Ash Petersen defeated Pam Griffiths and Tony Rowntree but will not reflect the excellent golf played by all four players and that they had decided, when standing on the 27^th tee (No 9 second time round) that if they halved the hole it would be too dark to continue and they would have to figure out a way to decide the winner!
