The 2014 club match play championships were held on Sunday and once again the men’s and women’s championships were held on the same day, a popular decision.
In the women’s senior (silver) final, played over 36 holes Sereana Phillipps played Linda Cameron in what proved to be a very even match. After 18 holes Sereana was three up but had had the ‘luck of the Irish’ on a number of holes, especially No 5 where she put her drive through the trellis by the greenkeepers shed only to recover and halve the hole. In the afternoon round she maintained her advantage to finally win over a gallant Linda, 4 and 3.
In the men’s senior final long time friends but seldom opponents, Brent Mackenzie and Sam Forrester faced each other and, this time, Sam proved too strong for Brent. After being two up after 18 holes Sam applied the after burners and played the first three holes after lunch two under the card and eventually win 6 and 5.
The women’s Bronze A final was between Jocelyn Pollock and Sue Rutene and although Jocelyn won 7 and 6 Jocelyn said that the score did not reflect the closeness of the match.
Because of an injury to her opponent, Isobelle Weaver won the women’s Bronze B final by default and in the James Jug, the ladies 18 hole championship, Trish Newcombe made in a three peat by winning over Marilyn Beetham.
In the other men’s championships the intermediate final saw a 4 and 3 win to last year’s beaten finalist Phil Rutene over Geoff Masters. Geoff had a ‘horror’ start to the 36 hole final losing the first 5 holes so came back well later in the match.
In the junior men’s final last year’s runner up, Carl Christensen played Mike Dixon in a very even tussle. Mike was two up at lunch but Carl came back to square the match before Mike eased away for a 6 and 4 win.
In the Masters final, played over 18 holes, Bruce Watkins proved too steady for Tony Rowntree and won 4 and 3.

Last Tuesday the ladies held a very successful Trust House Melbourne Cup tournament. The best overall score and also winner of the Norah Lambourn Trophy was Linda Cameron with 39 points. Other results were-

On Tuesday the ladies had the Lendrum Buttons competition and there were two clear winners with Carolyn Stevenson winning the Silver and Ann Kenny, the bronze. Results were-

Last Wednesday the 9 holers played the second round of the club champs and Di Herbert was the winner with 39, followed by Lorraine Jones on 41. Ger Southey won the PGG Wrightson longest drive.
Winter ‘came back’ last Thursday for the New World Supermarket stableford competition and only 7 men entered the competition which was won by Gavin Harris with 38 points from Dennis Hogg and ash Peterson with 35.
The Saturday club field played a stableford round in one division. Results were-

The Fagan Ford Nearest the Pin was Kelvin Biggs.
Recently the final of the Jimmy Shearer was played between Alan and Jenny Sadler and Murray Wolland and Sereana Phillipps. The match was very close and after 9 holes all square, but, as often happens, ‘Amen Corner’ came into play and the Sadler’s moved to two up and won 16 to win the trophy 3 and 2.
This weekend the major event is the Lansdowne Park Masters tournament, with 18 holes on Saturday and another 18 on Sunday. There is also a separate Sunday only section for those who prefer to play only 18 holes. A draw will be made on Friday so enter quickly.
The entry sheet is up for the big Bottle-O Turkey tournament- the draw sheet is up on the window in the foyer and there are still some spaces available to get in quickly, and don’t forget twilight has started on Wednesdays.
Off the Fairway
You have to feel sorry for one finalist in the club champs. Playing the first hole in a 36 hole final one player ‘pulled his second shot into the small, newly planted trees behind the men’s blue tee on No 2. His third shot hit the post supporting a new sapling and rebounded behind him and then his 4th shot hit a similar support on the next door tree and also went backwards. His fifth shot ended up beside the green but by then the damage had been done!
