The women’s interclub has taken centre stage during the last week with all the pennants teams playing and the Riverside Cup held at Eketahuna.
On Monday the Masterton Div 1 Manuka pennants team played Royal Wellington at Martinborough for an excellent 6-3 win. Singles wins were recorded by Linda Cameron, Brenda Blatchford, Jo Lucas and Jocelyn Pollock. This result puts Masterton at the top of Div 1 after two rounds.
In the other Div 1 division our Totara team also had a good win 5-4 against Royal Wellington, this time at Te Marua. Singles wins went to Carolyn Stevenson and Roselee Thurston. This team is also at the top of their division.
In Div 2 Masterton Kowhai played Miramar at Boulcott Farm for a close 3½-2½ victory with wins to Jan Tatham, Anne Smith and Ngaire Stevens (8/6) and in the other Div 2 division Masterton Matai had a 4-2 win at home against Judgeford, with victories to Lesley Stewart, Pam Griffith, Marilyn Beetham and Trish Newcombe. Prior to the weekend the Riverside Cup team had played Mahunga at Eketahuna for a 5-1 win with points to Jeanette McNae, Shirley Saunders, Jane Buchanan, Anne Kenny and Isobelle Weaver. This topped of a very successful three days for the women’s interclub who made it a clean sweep in a competitions and divisions.

The Graeme Jones Car Rental Nearest the Pin was won by Larraine Duckett and the New World No 18 by Pam Griffith.
The 9 Holers held a stableford round on Wednesday which was won by Errol Warren with 26 stableford points from Val Diedrichs and Di Alexander, both with 21. The PGG Wrightson Longest Drive went to Geri Southey and the All Teed Up Nearest the Pin to Di Herbert.
Last Thursday the New World Supermarket competition was won by John Tatham with 40 points from Carl Christensen, also with 40. Third were Gary Stewart and Jeff Ogg, both on 37. The All Teed Up Nearest the Pin was Kelvin Biggs.
The Saturday club field was seriously depleted with a large contingent competing in the Riversdale Open but the men’s club field played a stroke round for the Challenge Shield and Chairman’s Trophy while the women played a stableford round. Results were-

The All Teed Up Nearest the Pin was awarded to Simon Buckley.
The early leader in the Challenge Shield is Kerry Mountcastle with a gross 73 and in the Chairman’s Trophy, Simon Buckley’s nett 70 puts him in front.
The TRC Toyota Twilight attracted 34 players for a round in perfect conditions, and yet the scores were less than impressive as only Jan Williams, with 20 points, got into the 20’s. She won the women’s division while Hugh Blundell, on 19, won the men’s.
Harry Quinn and Jan Tatham won the Wairarapa Funeral Services Longest Drives into the wind on the 9th and Simon Smith was closest to the pin on the 8th to win the ATU Ball.
The Matahiwi Challenge saw Ian Hollings awarded the Pinot Noir for gathering 5 points on the 9th when he scored a par off a nine-hole 25 handicap. Quite remarkable!
This season’s TRC Toyota 500 was won on the 4th hole of the night by the team of Brian Pollock, Brian Crump, Harry Quinn and Jocelyn Pollock when they accumulated 500 stableford points for the season.
Next week, the 18 February, sees the last full 9 hole round and the “finals” night is set for 25 February.
This Saturday is the first week of the men’s 18 hole interclub with both teams playing at Masterton so No 1 tee will be closed from 8.30 to 9.30 approximately. The men’s club field will play a stableford round and the women, par round.
A new prize has been introduced that is ‘open’ to all members. All you have to do is be in the 19th on Saturday afternoon when a draw is made to win the Poste Haste Members Draw. If the member whose number is drawn is not present, the prize jackpots to the following Saturday. At the present time the pool sits at $40.
Off The Fairway
Last weekend, at the Riversdale Open, the final of the championship flight was played between two Masterton players, Paul Fouhy and Dennis Hogg. Both these ‘short course’ experts had won the Open a number of times so it was going to be a very even battle and so it proved with the match very even until the last few holes when Paul Fouhy got his ‘nose in front’ and won the championship.
