Rarely in the men’s 18 hole interclub competitions does a team win by 15-0, especially not in the low to middle divisions, but last Saturday the Masterton Div 6 team achieved this result, playing Ohariu Valley at Masterton. By winning all five of the 4 ball matches and all ten of the singles the Masterton team completed a 15-0 win, but they are well aware they still have to visit Ohariu and the result could be completely different, Singles wins went to Gary Tennant, Ash Peterson, Phil Rutene, Joe Tuoro, Bruce Watkins, Mike Dixon, Carl Christensen, Dennis Hogg, Steve Hemingway and Paul Fouhy with Ash Peterson’s 8-6 win earning him ‘Player of the Day’.
Div 3 were playing ‘away’ at Shandon and just to emphasise the problem of winning away in the 18 hole divisions suffered a large defeat. The 13½-1½ loss meant that the only singles winner was David Cook.
The only other interclub match that Masterton teams played in the last week was the 9 holers who hosted all the 9 hole teams at Masterton on Monday. Masterton played Waikanae for a 3-1 win with victories to Di Herbert and Ruth Wiley.
The 9 holers also had a PGG Wrightson stroke and shootout qualifier last Wednesday. The competition was won by Nolene Eastwood with 36 nett from Ruth Wiley with 37. The PGG Wrightson Longest Drive was won by Marilyn Price and Helen Ordish was the All Teed Up Nearest the Pin.
The vets played their stableford round on Wednesday last week. Results were-

The Thursday New World stableford competition was won with an enormous 45 points by David Cook, who had a 69 gross as well. Second was Ian Harrowfield and Dennis Hogg with 41each, Dennis once again equalling his age. Fourth were David Dew and Alan Sadler on 40. The All Teed Up Nearest the Pin was Murray Johnston and the jackpot was not struck, yet again.
There are no women’s results this week as they are playing the 36 hole Nancy MacCormick Foursomes- the results of this competition will be published next week.
The major event this week is the Trust House Wairarapa Women’s Open on Friday with a tee off at 10am. Entries are still being received for this event which features gross, nett and stableford prizes.
This Saturday, for the first time in some weeks there is no men’s interclub. The men are playing for the Riverside Salver (individual stableford competition) and the women have a par round. Both men and women have a Moore Stephens Markham Shootout qualifier.
Off The Fairway
Easter is in two weeks and on Easter Monday the club holds the Easter Bunny Open Tournament with an 11am tee off and an entry fee of $20 with all proceeds going towards the new practice nets.
