The Jameson Cup, which the men played for on Saturday, is named after former president and respected club member, Joe Jameson. Joe was President of the club from 1948- 50 but is best known by his title ‘Six O’clock Joe because it was one of his jobs to make sure the 19th was closed in the days of 6 o’clock closing! Saturday’s Jameson Cup, a 4BBB Par competition, turned out to be another brilliant scoring round and it has been my privilege to firstly play alongside last week’s winner of the Maunsell Trophy, John Hopkirk with +11, and then on Saturday to accompany Ray Verhaart, who with partner, Rob Blackett, also recorded a +11 to win the Jameson Cup. However their win was not as clear cut as you would expect as Bill Sangster and Alan Carroll came in with +10 for second and third was Carl Christensen and Ash Peterson with +9. These paired results were also reflected in the club individual par competition. Results were- 1st Ash Peterson +5 2nd Ray Verhaart +5 3rd Bill Sangster +4 4th Murray Wolland +3 Ray Verhaart was nearest the pin on the All Teed Up No 8. Last week the final of the Baker Fourball was played between Ash Peterson and Carl Christensen and Ray Verhaart and Simon Smith. It proved a very tight affair with eventually Smith and Verhaart getting to 3 up with 5 to play before their opponents came back and the match was only decided with a win to Smith and Verhaart on the 18th green. The finalists in the men’s club champs have almost all been found. In the senior division Sam Forrester will play current champion, Brent Mackenzie. One of these two excellent golfers have been in the final for 11 of the last 12 years, but this will be the first time they will have meet in the final. The intermediate final will be Phil Rutene playing Geoff Masters and the master’s final will be between Tony Rowntree and Bruce Watkins. The only finalists to be decided are in the junior final where Carl Christensen will play either David Greenlees or Mike Dixon. The Tuesday ladies field played ‘Split Sixes’ where the field plays six holes of stableford, six holes of par and then six nett holes. Winners were- Stableford Jane Buchanan 13 Par Pam Griffith +4 Nett Shura Lindsay 21 The Nearest the Pin’s were Chris Lewis in the Silver division and Jan Tatham in the Bronze. The Wednesday 9 holers played an ambrose round which was won by Ruth Wiley’s team from Penny Bunny’s team. The PGG Wrightson Longest Drive went to Lorraine Jones. The good scoring in the New World Supermarket Thursday stableford competition continues with Ian Harrowfield winning with 42 points, closely followed by Harry Quinn with 41. Third, on 40, was Jack Richmond, then Simon Buckley and Tony Rowntree on 38. The All Teed Up Closest to the Pin was Bob Hill. The WBS Tournament on Labour Day was postponed and will now be held this Saturday with cards in at 11.45 for a 12 noon shotgun start. Next Tuesday is Melbourne Cup Day and the women organise a tournament (11.30 shot gun start) which is open to both men and women with all visitors welcome. Just phone the office to enter. Off The Fairway Over the last two weeks two of gum trees on the course have been felled and members have been asking ‘why?’ Firstly the gum tree between the 7th and 9th fairways had to go because it was dead. Last year, for no apparent reason, it up and died so has been removed, and the second tree, behind the second green has been felled by the Council as it was interfering with the water tanks. The council wanted to remove it about 5 years ago but the Board resisted because it was a useful ‘marker’ when playing your second (or third) on No 2, but after another approach by the council the Board has agreed.
