The WCM Legal Hospice Wairarapa Ambrose Tournament was held on the course last Friday and attracted 22 teams in what turned out to be the best weather day of the week. Hospice Wairarapa provides support and care for those living with any form of terminal illness and helping patients and their friends with free palliative services.
The tournament was won by ‘Hoochie Boys’, named after a ‘famous’ (or infamous) race horse. The team scored 53.88 points, which included 8 birdies and an eagle on No 2. Abbreviated results were-
1st Hoochie Boys (Brad Chittick, Mike Dixon, Ewen Macdonald, Frazer Mailman) 53.88
2nd Smoking Aces (Wallace Miller, Toni Seanoa, Paul McMillian, Cameron Wheeler) 55.38
3rd Rotary and Friends (Alan Kirkham, David Dew, Colin Murphy, Pim Borren) 55.38
4th GT Stickman (Suele Soromon, Geoff Lewis, Try Davies, Shiro Cribb) 55.38
5th Muzza’s Mob (Murray Wolland, Jeff Ogg, Lola Ogg, Russell Stewart) 55.50
One of the interesting innovations was the ‘Pimp the Pro’ offer where a team, on No 1, could pay (with the money going to the hospice) and have pro Joel Macklin hit the drive for them which gave most teams a head start! Congratulations to Sue Rutene who organised yet another highly successful fundraiser, assisted by many Hospice volunteers.
The other major achievement of the week happened last Thursday when Dennis Hogg ‘beat his age’ in the New World Thursday competition. Dennis scored a gross 77 and with his age at 79 became the first person to achieve this this year and the first for some time to do it in the middle of winter.
Dennis Hogg’s 44 stableford points obviously won the New World competition from Jack Richmond with 40, Bob Hill with 39 and a swag on 38. The birdsnest still remains ‘unstruck’ and is now $471
On Tuesday the women’s club day played a Home Pennants stableford round which doubled as the Secretary v Captain’s competition. Pam Griffith, the women’s captain won the later and other results were-
Silver
1st Linda Cameron
2nd Marilyn Strang
3rd Carolyn Stevenson
Bronze
1st Carol Morgan
2nd Janice Hayes
3rd Lorraine Stewart
The Closest to the Pin on No 8 was Marilyn Strang and on No 18, Janice Hayes.
Last Wednesday’s 9 holers played a PGG Wrightson stableford. The competition was won by Lorraine Jones on 18 points from Val Diedrichs, also with 18. The PGG Wrightson Longest Drive went to Di Herbert and the All Teed Up Nearest the Pin to Kate Bunny.
Both the Saturday club competition and the Monday vets were cancelled.
This Saturday the men’s club field will probably play a stableford round and the women will have a LGU and putting competition. Teams are now being accepted for the Quiz Night to be held on Friday 4 September- teams of four with Chris Cogdale as the quizmaster.
Off The Fairway
It seems a long way away but the first meeting to form an organising committee for the 2016 Recreational Services Pro Am will be held on Thursday 27 August at 5.15pm in the club house. This is a great opportunity for members of both Eketahuna and Masterton who want to do something worthwhile to help their club become involved in an event that will help their club.
